setting / locations.
- The island of Crescentview is a sprawling landscape lush with dense forests, towering mountains and white sand beaches. At its center is a small town populated by locals who have lived and raised their families on the island for many decades. Once a prosperous land known widely for its export of fresh produce, the various farms dotting the isle have fallen into disrepair when the resident god vanished without a trace.
Now under the purview of the new Goddess, the many dilapidated farms that dot the isle have had new life breathed into them thanks to the arrival of new would-be farmers. It is her hope that their collective efforts are enough to revitalize the island and return it to its former glory.
- All across the island is a wide array of different farmlands each with their own unique benefits and challenges. Each property is within walking distance of the other within their respective neighborhood and each neighborhood surrounds the town proper.
Sitting just outside the southern outskirts of town are rural farmlands perfect for growing a variety of different seasonal crops and flowering plants. The weather is temperate with only modest fluctuations in temperature during the heights of summer and winter. Most crops grow well here but don’t produce particularly high yields during harvests.
For those who love to fish and soak up the sun, there are a number of beachland plots spanning the coastline to the east. Vegetables don’t grow especially well on these farms, but tropical flowers are easy to cultivate and produce in large quantities thanks to the high humidity and sunlight. Every so often, an ice cream vendor will stop by the beach to offer farmers and beachgoers alike a tasty frozen treat.
The western forest doesn’t see quite as much sunlight as other farmlands do, making it perfect for cultivating a variety of fungi and fruit-bearing trees. Bioluminescent flowers grow exclusively in these deepwood forests and glow brightly at night.
A few plots of farmland also dot the mountains to the north of town. These high-altitude plots of land are fenced in by towering pine trees and see a lot of snowfall during the fall and winter months while the peak of the mountain is snowcapped year-round. In addition, many of the numerous lakes originating from the mountaintops are frozen all year round, perfect for those who enjoy ice skating and ice fishing. Root vegetables grow best here and can be harvested in abundance. The mines can also be found and explored here.
In addition, there is a natural hot springs about halfway up the mountains that is perfect for soaking in to alleviate one's aches and pains. The springs have recently been renovated to include a full-service inn. Spend the night, enjoy a cold drink while soaking in the bath, and try one of the vaunted spa-boiled eggs all the locals rave about.
- Each plot of land comes with a farmhouse, a field, a small orchard, a well for drawing water, a stable for a horse, a barn for large animals and a coop. Within the farmhouse are all the tools needed to work the land and even go fishing if one desires.
The farmhouse is a small single story building with a living area and brick fireplace, small kitchen with a stove, bathroom, and a single master bedroom that can hold either a single queen-sized bed or two small twins. The property is run down, having clearly seen better days, but livable enough. There may be holes in the roof that allow for the occasional leak and gaps in the hardwood floors that are quite easy to trip over. A small CRT television and VCR sit in the living room along with a dining table and four chairs. The Goddess, in her infinite wisdom, has sprung for a cable package for all island residents that includes a small selection of Hallmark-esque movies. A small refrigerator hums in the kitchen, its shelves and drawers stuffed with all the essentials needed for the residents within to get by until their first harvest is ready.
Each property also comes with its own plot of farmland for growing fruits, vegetables, flowers and more. A deep groundwater well beside the field provides all the water needed around the farm. A small orchard on the far end of the farm is perfect for growing fruit-bearing trees. The size of this plot is relatively large and the only limits on how much farmland can be utilized are the efforts of the farmers themselves.
Additionally, there are a number of buildings available for housing a variety of animals. Cows, sheep, pigs and more can be raised in the barn, but with the barn in a state of disrepair, there is little usable room available to house such large animals. Only two barn animals can occupy this space until it is upgraded by the carpenter. Similarly, the coop on the property is equipped to handle chickens and rabbits, but only four of these animals can fit in the dilapidated coop. The stable has seen better days, but it’s in decent enough shape to house a single horse.
A relatively large, empty space of land occupies the far end of the farm. Perhaps a greenhouse could be built here some day...?
- At the island’s heart is a small town of friendly residents who are eager to help the new farmers adjust to life on Crescentview. Get to know them and they might even share farming tips and the occasional meal with you! Holidays and events are held in the town square.
The following services are available in town:
A small two floor library with a collection of books donated by residents and previous visitors. Books on farming techniques, tool maintenance and upkeep, local myths and legends and everything in between can be found on the shelves. Here are also a variety of recipe books for those who enjoy cooking.
A clinic stocked with a multitude of medicines to keep farmers healthy and active. A handful of doctors and nurses are on site for visits at any hour and minor surgeries are performed here. Additionally, there is a veterinarian next door who can address the health needs of any pets or barn animals.
A small grocery store carries a small assortment of items to aid in cooking and general housekeeping. They do not carry seeds or farming equipment, but if you run low on flour or cooking oil mid-meal, this family-run business has you covered. Additionally, they carry a number of board games and hobby items (Twister, darts, water guns, etc.) to keep you occupied during your downtime in the farm.
The winery run by a local couple keeps their shelves stocked year-round with a variety of seasonal wines from all over the world. With the help of Crescentview's new resident farmers, they hope to one day stock some local wines as well.
Stop by the inn if you ever tire of your humble farmland accommodations and want to check into one of the private rooms upstairs. Rates are reasonable, and for one of Crescentview's hard-working farmers, the least they can do is give you a free night on the house every now and then.
There is a bar located on the first floor of the inn where the resident barkeep is more than happy to open a tab if you promise to bring him some of your fresh seasonal produce. Freshly renovated, the bar provides a wide selection of drinks from neighboring islands and countries, but none of the names of the bottles ring any bells. Happy Hour is from 5pm to 7pm every night. In addition, a fairly robust dinner menu will keep you well fed on nights you aren't up to cooking for yourself. At the far end of the bar is a karaoke machine just begging to be used.
The local carpenter and his team are available to upgrade housing and farm buildings— provided the orders come with the Goddess’ stamp of approval. Without a stamp from the Goddess herself, the carpenter will not sign off on any building projects proposed no matter how much money is offered to him.
A small boutique carries a number of cute farmcore clothing for all your farming needs. Whether you need a new set of overalls or a pair of matching T-shirts, this is your go-to destination for the latest 90's fashions. Clothing from foreign lands can be imported, but you may be waiting a while for your shipment to come in.
The blacksmith can take any jewels and ores discovered in the mines and fashion them into unique jewelry and gifts for your friends and loved ones. All he asks for in terms of payment are whatever remains of the gems themselves after crafting your item from them... and maybe a share of whatever you cooked for dinner last night.
Islekea is a large two story building that allows farmers to purchase unique furnishings originating from the various worlds and homelands of their neighbors. The only catch is that these furniture sets require you to build them yourself. Get to work!
- Rumor has it that the Goddess resides in a small lake in the depths of the woods. Knowledgeable locals suggest tossing an offering of fruit into the pond to get on her good side. But beware, toss in anything she doesn’t like and she might curse you!
