[ scheming and planning wasn't exactly one of achilles' strong suits. hence, he's basically decided to wing this whole exploration thing. he figures, how dangerous could it feasibly be? (maybe a lot). that said, he's about to enter, before he catches sight of a stranger, who may be in a similar predicament with equally similar goals.

he casually raises an arm up, an easygoing smile. ] Yo! [ he moves his spear against his shoulder idly as he looks him over. ] You the type who enjoys a bit of danger? [ obviously, this is the only way to invite someone to traverse the unknown mines with you. ]

[ That's something they have in common! What is scheming and planning, we just don't know.

But winging things and living life on the edge? Yeah, that's definitely the way. A certain someone (or someones) might have something to say about how he makes these wonderful decisions, but neither one of those individuals are here today. It's go time. ]

Heh, you bet it.

What's life without a little danger?

[ While they're greeting, anything screaming ~dangerous~ nearby the two of them, or is the mine just looking like a mine that needs to be properly explored a little ways down before they encounter anything? ]

[ Luckily(?), the entrance floor and the next two floors (B1F, B2F) seem to be... very uneventful other than it being dark from the first floor. However, the way to the next floor (B3F) seems pretty steep. Watch your step! ]

[ it's impossible to deny the obvious hint of excitement on achilles features as he puts a hand to the corner of his brow and he squints into the distance. he doesn't see anything yet, but he does notice the steepness to the next floor. while the first two floors seemed pretty uneventful, that isn't enough to deter him, at least. ]

Watch your step. [ he advises softly. not that he thinks anyone who would agree to coming down here needed the extra help, but he assumed it never hurt to be extra careful in a place that was basically a complete mystery.

still just in case, he seems to stick close to yuri, not straying too far ahead of behind. ] You used to this kinda stuff?

[ Yuri has also learned from his last time, so he actually has a flashlight with him! Wonder of wonders.

Flynn might actually be proud of him. ]

That'll be easy enough.

[ He uses said flashlight to luminate their every step, careful not to suddenly run ahead into the unknown. Smarter to stick closer than not. ]

Something like that. I've traveled a lot back home. What about you?

[ While they're chatting, Yuri's flashlight will shine on... a treasure chest! It's actually in the way in a sense that it's blocking the path from top to bottom. It's a huge treasure chest. So how would one open it? It seems like there's a button in the center. ]

[ honestly, achilles is impressed at how prepared he is! he really did choose the right guy to come in here with. that said, he gives a small nod at yuri's words. ] Well traveled, huh? That makes sense.

It's the same for me. Most of my time was spent on a battlefield, but I'd like to think I saw enough. [ in theory. that said, it's never a bad thing to have a heart for adventure. but, before he could dive any deeper, he stops at the ...

... extremely large treasure chest in front of them. ]

This has to be some kind of trap... [ but, it doesn't stop him from trying to inspect it. ... and touch it. ]

Well, the battlefield can bring you to a lot of places...

[ Especially if the battlefield is moving. Speaking of a 'battlefield', he's staring at the obvious and odd-looking treasure chest. There are mimic-like enemies in his world so even he's immediately suspicious of its appearance.

His hand is immediately on the hilt of his blade, and while Achilles just went ahead and touched the thing, he's prepared to attack. ]

I wouldn't be surprised if it was. Be on the lookout.

[ Does anything happen... ]

[ Something sure does happen! The treasure chest immediately shrinks to the size of a human child because guess what? It suddenly grew stick legs and arms! It's a mimic!! The rim of the "mouth" has sharp teeth. Mwehehehe. It charges forward to attack!

To successfully defend, roll higher than a 5. To just kill it, Rider and Yuri's rolls must total more than 20. ]

[ this probably should be expected, but from there, he immediately jumps back (i think i did this right); his weapon wedged between him and the mimic's teeth. preparing himself to try and attack it, he already gets into stance, his spear into position - which he watches the ceiling for. he comprehends a mine is probably not the most ideal location for a spear fight, but he presumes...

human side treasure chests aren't exactly the most natural thing in the world either. or maybe it is and he's the one out of touch? ] Damn, would you look at those teeth. You're going to have to do better than that. [ as always even in the face of the unknown his confidence doesn't waiver.

but, he's grateful his partner seems even more quick on the uptake. maybe he even seemed used to it? he pockets the idea to save for later. ]

[ ...Yuri's danger senses coming in clutch. He knew he could smell a specific kind of trap a mile away (not literally), and knowing is half the battle??

Incidentally, it is at this time that his luck decides to finally hit above 5 and not a 2 or nat 1.

He's already going in for the attack after the charge, sword trying to reach it— ]

Not gonna catch us off-guard here. Nice try, though.

[ At least both of them are prepared enough not to get utterly bowled over by the malicious creature. ]

[ A whopping 31! Their retaliation annihilates the mimic and it withers(?) away, shrinking in size before it pops out of existence. Weh, weh... In the typical JRPG fashion, it has dropped a ruby and emerald, which is half the size of one's fist each. Pretty big ones, all things considered. ]

[ oh...

that went down a lot easier than he thought, but maybe he should thank yuri for being so on top of that. he stretches his shoulders out a bit, before resting his spear over his shoulders, with his arm over it.

he sees the gems, and gives a meaningful look towards yuri: ] Good work. Looks like it gave us something after all. Which one did you want? [ not that achilles necessarily wants one, but who knows? maybe it had its use somewhere.

unless this is also a trap then he knows nothing. ]

[ Sometimes, the power of combined strikes in the heat of the moment is just that powerful. Counterattacks are quite dangerous to contend with indeed!

Well, Yuri's going to be giving a look over the loot displayed before them. ]

I guess I'll go ahead and take the emerald.

[ He doesn't have much of a preference, to be honest, but he's not an indecisive person at all! He'll be picking up the emerald piece and putting it away JRPG-style. He'll wait for Achilles to do the same. ]

Want to see if there's anything else up ahead?

[ What shortly lies up ahead is a giant cliff. It seems that some parts of the mines were crumbling and the mine cart tracks are naturally severed by this development. If someone shines a flashlight down on it, they can catch a glimpse of something shiny, but it's a loooong way down.

There may be precious treasures deep below. ]

Then that leaves me with the ruby. [ he also doesn't seem inherently interested in it, but he does seem to pick it up regardless. almost as if it were an obligation of some sort. still, he pockets it quickly, before giving a firm nod. since they came this far, it didn't make sense to turn back yet.

that said, it's not long before they see the edge of some sort of cliff. achilles looks down below, his head cocking to the side. ] Seems kinda unnatural, doesn't it? [ how the track just sort of ends. he can only guesses how that came to be, but... ]

How's your climbing skills?

[ Yuri does shine his flashlight, looking at the long way down, like hmm...

Well. Nothing to it. ]

Kind of, yeah. Though there's easily ways it can happen perfectly naturally.

[ Earthquakes, structural issues, the like...but all that said, he's prepared to get moving. ]

Pretty decent if you ask me.

[ Yuri's got climbing skills that would put pro climbers to shame. He's going to test out how well the wall is for climbing, shining a light down on the rocky side. They're probably not so lucky to have a ladder conveniently nearby, though he also checks to see if someone strung one over one portion of the cliff as well. If not, he will begin to test the stability of it, hooking one leg and seeing how easy it is to get his footing stable first before they begin to climb down in earnest. ]

[ The wall, unfortunately, is not something that is able to be climbed. They gotta bite the bullet and jump in or head back. There are also no traces of anyone having tried to climb down the pitfall.

i can't kill anyone in the mines so be assured that no death will happen here ]

[ damn, this was looking kind of rough.

while he also didn't have trouble climbing, it looked like they weren't really being offered an option here. but, that doesn't mean they couldn't figure something out. even back in his time alive, he would argue he's gone through far more daunting trials and tribulations. hence, he does what any reasonable person would do... ] Well, nothing ventured nothing gained. I don't like the idea of not pushing my limits here. [ besides, the goddess struck him as a decent woman.

so in theory??? they were probably under her protection?

not that, he actually thinks that matters here. hence, he lowers himself over the edge with a hand, before kicking off the side with a nice flip and diving straight down. he is honestly, not minding the prospect of getting injured because easier a wound on his body than his pride. ] Hope you don't mind me going ahead!

[ unless he goes splat, then please don't follow him. ]

[ Rough's sure a word for it.

At least it becomes clear soon enough to them how the situation has become quite difficult to deal with, given everything. ]

...I can't say I do either.

[ Not that Yuri minds pushing his limits in a normal bout. But, when it comes to a situation like this? Even he is more careful rather than simply rash. As he's standing there, thinking of another approach, Achilles is already moving into action, and he really can't believe it. For once, Yuri wonders if this is how Flynn has felt about some of the things he has done. Having some actual self-awareness in a time like this...

But you know what? 'When in Rome', as they say. Yuri shakes his head with a disbelieving laugh, but then he'll position himself a bit so he can make a leap down—then he'll suddenly strike out with his blade into the wall beside him, hoping to slow down his fall just a tad. Provided his blade gets a good hold as he's sliding down the wall (doing this one-handed), he's angling the flashlight below, and then if he is able to spot something like the bottom of the floor some feet away, he'll rip the sword out of the wall, tucking his feet under and hoping for the best with a roll aimed to absorb the force of the fall.

In before this isn't necessary, but ICLY, Yuri doesn't know that, hah. ]

[ Whoever lands first will be met with a soft landing as if they landed on a hundred pillows to protect them against the harsh ground. Whoever lands second is going to have a lot of feathers in his face because of that. Hope the first person can catch him, because this soft landing? Only big enough for one person. ]

[ naturally, he lands faster, if just because he was far more reckless. when he's caught by the pillows, he's definitely surprised. while it wasn't a trap per se, it was for sure something deliberate in part of their surroundings.

but, he barely has time to settle, if just because he realizes he's probably on the safest point, and so from here, he drops his spear before reaching his arms out, fully prepared to go ahead and catch yuri. he sees yuri did what he could to settle his fall a bit, and so he says loudly, if just to reassure him: ]

Don't worry! I got you!

[ Yeah... it's deliberate alright. But in such a way that leaves even Yuri just nonplussed.

Maybe he should be annoyed too, though he just can't quite manage that. The perks of being actually very much a level-headed kind of guy. In certain instances, anyway. We don't talk about his time as a vigilante. ]

I'll be counting on you, then!

[ Anyways, he will indeed let himself be caught by Achilles! At least none of them went splat. Anything else that can be noticed in their immediate surroundings besides the pillows? He's going to be using the flashlight to shine some light around here or there soon enough, after all. ]

[ The feathers are indeed quite soft. They don't seem to have magical properties of any kind, but they're welcome to take some if they want for whatever reason. Just like there are a bunch of desert rose crystals embedded in the mine's walls. In fact, there's so many of them that the walls of this entire floor are covered with them. Being in here is a good way to calm yourself down. Perhaps it's the crystals' influence.

They'll have to continue down the mines... ]

[ he catches yuri easily enough. keeping his tight to his chest upon impact, if just to keep his center of gravity nice and even. with that, he sets him back down on his feet whenever he's ready. but yeah.... even if he doens't exactly put it in words, he's kind of relieved it works out.

in his haste to look around, he doesn't end up picking up feathers, but he does notice all the rose crystals. using the tip of his spear, he does his best to try and pry a few off the walls.

but, huh.... he did feel oddly at peace here. ] Do you think we're allowed to take these?
